About me
Let me introduce myself. My name is Vanessa Pollen. I am an International Pet Portrait and Wildlife Artist whose exceptional talent and passion shines through in every piece of artwork that I create. My artistic journey began in Zimbabwe where I was born and is so deeply rooted in my family heritage. Having inherited my remarkable skills and passion from my father and grandmother, who were both accomplished artists in their own mediums, they encouraged me throughout my childhood to continue drawing.
My life took a transformative turn when my family and I immigrated to New Zealand in 2016. We sadly had to leave our own much-loved pets behind, which left a huge hole in my heart. My husband could see my pain and encouraged me to get back into my art by drawing other peoples’ pets. He knew it would bring so much joy into their hearts while in turn it would start to heal my own. From this he purchased my first art desk which reignited my passion for drawing after a 20-year hiatus. From this my journey began and my dream of becoming a full-time artist became reality. It has taken several years to perfect my skills and style with countless hours of drawing to get to the level of skill you see today. I specialize in realistic and life like animal portraits, and I began with monochrome graphite pencils as I love the simplicity of black and white. I then explored something slightly different by using high-grade colour pencils and learnt to master the vibrant and totally different techniques that this medium has to offer. I am continuously learning new things and look forward to what each new day will bring
My dedication to realism shines through in every piece I do, with a particular focus on the eyes, which I believe are the windows to the soul. Each drawing I create, becomes a celebration of the bond between humans and animals, capturing not just the physical likeness of my subject but their spirit, personality and character. Each pet portrait is a labor of love, reflecting my profound admiration and love for art and animals.
I find immense joy in creating personalized pieces, drawing strength and inspiration from the heartfelt reactions from my clients. Their emotional responses to my work just reinforce my dedication to continuing my work while at the same time being reminded of why I love what I do. Whether I’m immortalizing a cherished pet or showcasing the beauty of wildlife, my portraits are more than just art—they are treasured memories brought to life on paper which can be passed down for generations to come.
